Organic Dip-Spin Coatings

Organic finishes describe a variety of nonmetallic coatings applied to fasteners using the dip-spin process. These coatings are widely used for applications where the fasteners will be exposed to extreme outdoor environments. For recessed drives, care must be exercised to reduce the risk of the topcoat filling in the recess geometry.

Typically, the organic topcoat is applied over an inorganic, metallic base layer, which is deposited on top of the underlying steel substrate. This class of coatings is referred to as inorganic-organic duplex coatings, and represents a wide range of organic materials and chemistries from several manufacturers.

The metallic base layer coating is typically zinc (whether electroplated or mechanically applied) or phosphate. I some cases, the organic topcoat is applied directly on the steel fastener substrate, but this less common.

Typical anti-corrosion performance, as measured in a standard salt spray test (ASTM B117), is between 500-1000 hours of salt spray corrosion resistance. However, by adjusting base coating and top-coat thickness, and aditional polymer sealers, salt spray resistance can exceed 2000 hours. Another advantage of organic topcoats is that they are available in large range of colors.

JC Grand offers a large selection of organic coating systems. Below are a few of the most popular brands.

Ruspert and related metal finishes represent a high-grade metal surface processing technology that prevents corrosion, suitable for heavy-duty exterior applications. The coating system consists of three layers: a metallic zinc layer, a high-grade anti-corrosion chemical conversion film, and a baked metal-rich organic surface coating.

The Magni 500 Series of coatings extend fastener life by eliminating corrosion. In addition to corrosion control, Magni coatings also provide lubricity and conductivity, which can also improve product performance. Magni manufactures both solvent and waterborne liquid coatings used for rust prevention on metal surfaces. Most of the specific Magni formulations listed on the Magni USA website are available as coatings on our fastening products.

Doerken/Dörken manufactures specially engineered corrosion resistant coatings for the automotive, military and diesel industries that meet a wide range of specifications. They are most notably known for their Delta Protekt, Delta Seal and Delta Tone series of coatings.
